Choosing your first carry pistol: what actually matters

By Kilo 1 Six Arms··2 min read
GLOCK 43X MOS 9mm pistol

Short answer: Choose a reliable, widely supported 9mm that fits your hand, that you can shoot accurately, and that you will actually carry every day. Then budget for a quality holster, defensive ammunition and practice.

Size and concealment

Carry pistols run from subcompact to compact. Shorter grips are easier to hide; longer grips give you more to hold and usually more capacity. Barrel and slide length matter less for concealment than grip length, because the grip is what prints through a shirt.

Shootability and fit

Hold several models. You want a firm, high grip with the trigger finger reaching the trigger naturally. Then shoot them: the gun you shoot best is a better choice than the one with the best spec sheet. Our range offers pistol rental so you can try before you buy.

Features worth having

  • Optic-ready slide. Lets you add a red dot now or later.
  • Good sights. Night sights or high-visibility front sights help in low light.
  • Accessory rail. Needed if you want a weapon light.
  • Safety options. Some models are offered with or without a manual thumb safety; pick what you will train with consistently.
  • Support. Popular models have the widest choice of holsters, magazines and parts.

Holster, ammo and practice

A carry gun is a system. Use a holster made for your exact model that covers the trigger guard. Carry quality defensive ammunition and confirm it runs in your pistol (see our 9mm practice vs. defense ammo guide). Practice regularly, and look into a class; see our training page.

FAQ

What size pistol is best for a first carry gun?

There is no single answer. Smaller guns hide more easily but are harder to shoot well; slightly larger compacts are easier to control. Pick the largest pistol you will actually carry every day.

Should my first carry pistol be optic-ready?

It is worth having. Many current compacts are optic-ready, so you can add a red dot later without replacing the gun.

Can I try a pistol before I buy it?

Yes. Our range offers pistol rental, so you can shoot before you commit. Check the range page for current rates.

Federal and state law apply to handgun purchases and carry. Check Alabama law before you carry.
