9mm practice vs. defense ammo: what to buy and why

Short answer: Train with affordable full metal jacket (FMJ) ammo; carry a quality jacketed hollow point (JHP) defense load. Then confirm your defense load runs reliably in your own pistol.

Practice ammo: FMJ

FMJ is the standard range round: a lead core with a full copper-alloy jacket and a round nose. It feeds reliably in most pistols and costs less, which means more rounds downrange. Buying in larger boxes lowers the cost per round.

Defense ammo: JHP and other expanding designs

Defense loads use bullets engineered to expand or otherwise control penetration, such as bonded or jacketed hollow points. Manufacturers design them to perform through common barriers like clothing. Pick a load from an established line and stay with it.

Bullet weight: 115, 124 or 147 grain

9mm bullets commonly come in 115, 124 and 147 grain. Lighter bullets generally leave the barrel faster; heavier bullets are slower and some shooters find their recoil feels softer. Point of impact can shift between weights, so check at the range. Try to practice with FMJ close in weight to your carry load.

Test your carry load

  • Fire several magazines of your chosen defense load through your carry pistol.
  • Watch for failures to feed, extract or lock back.
  • Use only ammunition your manufacturer approves; check the manual before using +P.
  • Rotate carry ammo periodically and inspect it for damage.

Ammo rules at our range

Kilo 1 Six Arms range rules prohibit tracer, steel core, buckshot and birdshot, and staff may inspect ammunition brought onto the range. See the full range rules.

FAQ

What is the difference between FMJ and JHP 9mm?

Full metal jacket (FMJ) bullets have a solid jacketed nose and are typically used for practice. Jacketed hollow point (JHP) bullets have a hollow nose designed to expand and are typically used for self-defense.

Can I practice with my defense ammo?

Yes, and you should fire enough of your chosen defense load to confirm it feeds and functions reliably in your pistol.

Is +P ammo safe in my pistol?

Only if your firearm manufacturer says so. Check your owner's manual before using +P ammunition.

What ammo is not allowed on the Kilo 1 Six Arms range?

Our range rules prohibit tracer, steel core, buckshot and birdshot. Ask range staff about approved ammunition.
